The Catholic Bishop Abuse Reporting Service has been established to receive reports of
sexual abuse and related misconduct by bishops, and to relay those reports to proper
Church authorities for investigation. Where a report includes a crime, such as the sexual
abuse of a minor, it will also be reported to civil authorities. Otherwise, reports will be kept
confidential.
If you have any other kind of complaint about a bishop—such as parish assignments,
church closings, or homily contents—please address those directly to your diocesan or
eparchial bishop instead. Sexual abuse by a priest, deacon or a staff member or volunteer of
the Church should be reported to the office of Victim Assistance in your local
diocese/eparchy.
So, to be sure you get the help you need, phone numbers and addresses
may be found on the diocesan/eparchial website.
If you are the victim of sexual abuse (or any other crime), please contact local law
enforcement.

RE: Child protection reminders
Office of the Bishop
|
Reverend and dear brothers in Christ,
Our responsibility to safeguard the children and the youth is of paramount importance. The youth represent the future of our beloved church, and for that I am asking you to always pay particular attention to the monthly issues of the on-line safe environment training that all of us receive from Virtus at www.virtus.org. These articles represent our continuous training and attention to the issue of child and youth protection. If you do not receive monthly reminders and would like to, contact Ann Fosnaught at the Chancery.
I would like to introduce the two people who volunteer for the Child and Youth Protection Office for our Eparchy. Julie Shocksnider, the Safe Environment Coordinator can be reached by email at julies@rcdcanton.org or by phone 802-522-0802. Ann Fosnaught, the Victim Assistance Coordinator can be reached by email at annf@rcdcanton.org or by phone at 330-493-9355. They would like to bring your attention to the eparchial website, where there are many resources to keep compliant: https://romaniancatholic.org/child-and-youth-protection.
When you have volunteers that are working close with your catechists or you have new catechists in your programs a criminal background check has to be obtained before the person will work with the children. Also, that person has to get into one of the Virtus safe environment training programs, often run by the local Roman Catholic Dioceses in your areas or Julie Shocksnider can conduct a class remotely. This will give the volunteers working with children the necessary training for safety measures when being in the company of the children teaching them.
Your compliance with all the requirements is vital for our compliance with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People (Art. 2) – the reporting procedure that needs to be followed in a case of an abuse. This is on our website and should be regularly posted in your bulletins and made available to the people.
The intent of this letter is to bring to your attention the importance that the Diocesan office and particularly myself give to the Protection of Children and Youth. I would like to thank you in advance for paying particular attention to all requests regarding the Child and Youth Protection Office.
Assuring you of my prayers and best wishes, I remain
Fraternally in Christ-God,
(Most Reverend) John Michael Botean, DD
Bishop of the Eparchy of St. George in Canton
